Paid surveys FAQ for Australians

Quick answers to the questions I get asked most. If yours isn't here, the answer is probably in my Octopus Group review or the earnings page.

How long does it take to actually earn $25?

On the highest-paying AU consumer panel (Octopus Group) it usually takes 1-3 weeks for a casual user to reach the $20 cashout threshold. On lower-paying panels it can take 1-3 months. If you're seeing claims of "$25 in your first day," they're either misleading you or talking about the rare premium surveys that most people never qualify for.

Do I need to pay tax on survey earnings in Australia?

This isn't tax advice and I'm not an accountant — talk to one if you're earning serious money. For most casual users, survey earnings are a small enough amount that they fall under hobby income rather than business income, but the ATO's general rule is that you need to declare any income you earn, regardless of source. If you earn more than a few hundred dollars in a year from surveys, mention it to your tax preparer or include it on your return. Octopus Group's terms explicitly note that you're responsible for any tax liabilities arising from your earnings.

Why do I keep getting screened out of surveys?

Screen-outs happen when you don't fit the demographic the survey is looking for. Every survey has a target — for example, "women aged 25-40 who own a car and have bought a major appliance in the last year." If you're outside that demographic, the survey's qualifying questions catch it and end the survey early. This isn't personal and it's not a glitch — it's how the entire industry works. Some panels (like Octopus) pay you a small consolation amount when you screen out. Others pay nothing.

If you're getting screened out of literally every survey, it's worth checking your profile is filled out completely and honestly — incomplete profiles get matched to fewer relevant surveys.

Is my data being sold?

Your survey responses are sold — but in aggregate, anonymously, to the brands and research firms that commissioned the survey. That's the entire business model. The panel collects your demographic profile when you sign up so they can match you to surveys, but legitimate panels don't sell your personal identifying details to spammers or marketers. Read the privacy policy of any panel you sign up to before joining, and stick to ones that have a clear, professional privacy policy.

Can I do paid surveys on my phone?

Yes — most modern panels work fine on a phone browser, and a few have apps. Octopus Group works through their normal website on mobile. Just be aware that some longer surveys are easier to complete on a desktop or tablet, especially if they involve typing or comparing options side by side.

How long does payout take?

Octopus Group says payouts take up to 28 days, but in my experience EFT to an Australian bank usually arrives within a week. Other panels vary — PayPal payouts are usually faster (a few days), gift card payouts are usually instant once approved.

Can I have multiple accounts on the same panel to earn more?

No. Every legitimate panel has a strict one-account-per-person rule, usually enforced by the requirement that each account has a unique mobile number and IP address. Trying to game this is the fastest way to get banned and have your earned balance forfeited. It's not worth it. If you want to earn more, sign up to multiple different panels instead.

What if I'm under 18?

Most panels require you to be 18 or older. Octopus Group is one of the few that allows 15+ with parental or guardian consent. Each panel's terms spell this out — check before signing up.

Why do you specifically recommend Octopus Group?

Because in my experience, on a per-minute-of-actual-work basis, they pay the most cash to Australian consumer panel members. Their $0.28/minute rate is the highest I've seen for a panel that genuinely targets Australians. They pay to your bank account in real Australian dollars. They have a $20 minimum cashout, which is reachable. They give you a small payment even when you screen out of a survey, which most panels don't. The full breakdown including what's not great about them is in my full review.

Is your referral link a scam?

No, but I want to be transparent about exactly what it is. When you sign up through my referral link to Octopus Group, you receive the same standard membership as if you signed up directly — same earnings, same rates, no bonus, no penalty. Octopus pays me a small commission ($2 for your first qualifying survey, then $1 per qualifying survey for the next 23, capped at $25 total) as a thank-you for referring you. You receive nothing extra, and your earnings are not affected in any way. If you'd rather sign up directly without using my link, you can absolutely do that — go to octopusgroup.com.au and create an account there instead. I'd rather you make an informed choice than feel pressured.

Do I have to use my real name and details?

Yes, on the survey panels themselves. Panels need accurate demographic data to match you to relevant surveys, and they need your real bank or PayPal details to pay you. Trying to use fake info will get you screened out of everything (because your profile won't match any real demographic) and banned when you try to cash out (because your bank account name won't match your registered name).

Can someone in another country use Octopus Group?

No. Octopus Group is restricted to residents of Australia and New Zealand. You need an AU or NZ mobile phone number to register, and they verify it via SMS. If you don't live in AU or NZ, look at Prolific instead — it accepts users from a wide list of countries and pays well, although study availability varies.

What other panels are worth signing up to alongside Octopus?

PureProfile and OpinionWorld AU are good complementary panels — different surveys, similar quality. Prolific is worth joining if you fit the academic-research demographic. Skip the rest unless you have a specific reason. Full comparison here.
