Tom's Survey Notes

Best paid survey sites in Australia — an honest comparison

Heads up: the panel I rank #1 here (Octopus Group) is one I have a referral link to. I'd still rank it #1 even without the referral arrangement — see below for the actual numbers — but you should know about it. I have no affiliation with any of the other panels listed.

Most "best paid surveys Australia" articles are auto-generated affiliate content that lists ten sites in random order, copies their marketing claims uncritically, and links to whichever ones pay the highest commissions. This isn't that.

I've personally signed up to all the panels below, taken surveys on most of them, and cashed out from several. Below is the comparison as it actually exists in 2026, not as the panels' homepages claim.

The shortlist

If you only want to sign up to one or two panels, here's where I'd start:

  1. Octopus Group — best per-minute pay rate for Australian consumer surveys, cash payouts to your bank account. My full review.
  2. PureProfile — second-best on rates, much higher invitation volume than Octopus. Worth signing up to as a complement.
  3. Prolific — only worth it if you fit the academic research demographic the platform serves. When studies are available you'll be paid well, but Australians often see long droughts.

You can sign up to all three at once and just take whichever surveys come in. There's no penalty for being a member of multiple panels.

Prolific £8/hr min, £12/hr typical (~AUD $16-20) ~AUD $10 PayPal (USD/GBP) Yes (limited studies) Excellent (4.6/5)
Toluna ~$1-3 per survey (low) ~$10-25 PayPal, gift cards Yes Average (4.1/5)
YouGov Slow, points-based 5,000 points (~$20) Gift cards only Yes Excellent (4.5/5)
OpinionWorld AU ~300 points/survey ~$10 PayPal, gift cards Yes Decent (4.2/5)
Swagbucks ~$2-4/hr (low for AU) ~$3 PayPal, gift cards Yes (limited) OK (4.0/5)
Pinecone Research n/a n/a n/a No Not available in AU
Branded Surveys n/a n/a n/a No Not available in AU

*Octopus has a 2.1/5 Trustpilot rating which sounds bad, but most negative reviews are about screen-outs and account suspensions near the cashout threshold — issues that exist on every panel but get blamed on Octopus more loudly because Octopus is bigger. More on this in my full review.

Per-panel notes

Octopus Group — my #1 pick for AU consumer surveys

Highest cash-equivalent pay rate of any panel that genuinely targets Australian consumers. $0.28 per minute, $20 cashout to your AU bank account, real Australian company with proper support. Realistic earnings $5-25/week for casual users. The big caveat is the screen-out rate, which annoys some users — but that's the case industry-wide. Read my full review before signing up so you understand both sides.

PureProfile — strong second pick

Australia's biggest mainstream survey panel. Trustpilot 4.2/5 from over 2,000 reviews — significantly better sentiment than Octopus, although the actual cash earnings per hour are similar or slightly lower. PureProfile pays $1.40 for 5-minute surveys and $2.80 for 10-minute surveys, which works out to $0.28/min on the short ones (matching Octopus) and a bit less on longer ones. Higher invitation volume than Octopus in my experience, so you'll get more chances to qualify. The main downside: end-of-survey disqualifications are common, and PayPal availability for AU users has been on-and-off recently. Worth signing up to as a complement to Octopus, not a replacement.

Prolific — academic research, different category

Prolific isn't really a "consumer survey panel" — it's an academic research platform used by university researchers and behavioural scientists. The pay is generally excellent: studies have a mandatory minimum of £8/hr (about AUD $16) and a recommended £12/hr (about AUD $24), and the screen-out rate is much lower because researchers pre-screen participants. Trustpilot rating is 4.6/5 — easily the best on this list.

The catch for Australians: most studies on Prolific are run by UK and US universities, which means they often want UK/US participants. Aussies can wait days or weeks between qualifying studies. Payouts are also in USD or GBP, paid via PayPal, which means you lose 3-4% to currency conversion. If you're an academic, a graduate student, or you fit a niche demographic researchers find interesting, Prolific can be the highest-earning panel here. If you're a typical consumer, it'll feel slow.

Toluna — high invitation volume, low pay

Massive international panel with millions of users worldwide. You'll get a lot of survey invitations from Toluna, but the pay per survey is low (typically $1-3 for surveys that take 10-20 minutes). The points system is needlessly confusing — you earn "points" that convert to cash or gift cards at unintuitive rates. Sentiment is okay (4.1/5 across 220,000+ reviews) but the consensus is "decent if you have nothing better, frustrating if you do." I'd skip it in favour of Octopus and PureProfile.

YouGov — low pay but pleasant experience

YouGov is the political opinion polling company. Their surveys are short, interesting, and rarely screen you out. Trustpilot 4.5/5 — users genuinely like the platform. The downside is that the pay rate is poor: you earn 100-500 points per survey, you need 5,000 points (about $20) before you can cash out, and you can only cash out as gift cards (no PayPal in Australia). Realistically you'll earn a $20 gift card every 2-4 months. Worth joining if you enjoy answering political/social questions, not worth it as a meaningful income source.

OpinionWorld AU — Australian-specific, average everything

Australian-specific panel run by international research company Dynata. Decent sentiment (4.2/5 from a smaller sample on Trustpilot, so take that with some salt), PayPal payouts work, around $10 minimum cashout. Rates are lower than Octopus but the platform is solid and Australian-targeted. A reasonable third or fourth panel to add to your rotation.

Swagbucks — global, weak for AU users

Swagbucks works best in the US, UK and Canada. Australian users get a much smaller pool of available surveys, and the realistic earnings from surveys alone are around $2-4 per hour. The platform also offers cashback shopping, watching videos, playing games, etc., which can add up if you're already shopping online — but for survey-only earnings it's well below Octopus and PureProfile. Trustpilot 4.0/5 globally, but the AU experience is meaningfully worse than the US one.

Pinecone Research and Branded Surveys — not available in Australia

Both of these get recommended in international "best survey sites" lists. Neither is currently available to Australian residents — Pinecone Research operates only in the US, UK, Canada, Germany and France, and Branded Surveys is similarly US/UK/CA only. Don't waste your time signing up if you're in Australia, you won't be eligible.

Bottom line

For an Australian wanting to make pocket money from paid surveys, the realistic shortlist is:

  1. Octopus Group for the best per-minute cash rate. Full review.
  2. PureProfile as a complement for higher invitation volume.
  3. Prolific if you fit the academic-research demographic.

You can comfortably be a member of all three at once. Skip the rest unless you specifically want what they offer (e.g. you genuinely enjoy YouGov's political polling, or you want Swagbucks for cashback shopping more than for surveys).

If you're still not sure whether paid surveys are worth your time at all, my page on realistic earnings expectations will give you a clearer picture before you sign up to anything.
