Octopus Group review — my honest take on Australia's highest-paying survey panel

The short version: Octopus Group pays $0.28 per minute — the highest rate of any major Aussie survey panel. Members on Reddit and Whirlpool reckon $20–100/month is realistic for casual use, and you cash out straight to your bank at $20. Trustpilot scores are a bit rough (~2.1/5), mostly from folks burned by screen-outs near payout or account bans — real complaints, I cover them honestly below, but every panel has a version of them. What is Octopus Group?
Octopus Group (full corporate name Octopus Group Enterprises, ABN 99 657 650 194, verifiable via the ABN Lookup) is an Australian-registered paid survey panel based in New South Wales. They've been going for over a decade, and per their own public statements they've got more than 350,000 members across Australia and New Zealand.
Here's how it actually works, pulled from their Terms of Service and FAQ:
- You register, fill out a demographic profile, and start getting survey invitations by email and via the member portal.
- Every completed survey adds cash to your account balance.
- Once you hit $20, you can withdraw via EFT to your Australian bank account, or grab a digital gift card from a range of retailers.
- No mandatory app, no weird points-to-cash conversion, no monthly commitment.
- Inactive accounts (no surveys for 12 months) can be terminated under the published terms, so don't sign up and forget about it.
Pay rate: $0.28 per minute
Octopus's published pay rate is $0.28 per minute of survey time. That's the highest of any major Aussie consumer panel I've found, and it's backed up by independent review sites and community reports (full sources listed on the sources page). A 10-minute survey pays about $2.80, a 20-minute one about $5.60, and crucially you see the exact dollar amount for every survey before you start it — so you know what you're in for.
$0.28/min works out to a notional rate of $16.80 per hour if you were actively in surveys the whole time. You won't be, though, because no survey panel works like that. Three things knock real earnings down:
- Invitations don't arrive on a schedule. Surveys depend on which market research clients are running studies and whether your demographic matches what they want. Members on r/beermoneyAus and Whirlpool consistently describe 3–6 invitations a week once your profile is complete, with the odd dead week and the odd busy one.
- Screen-outs. Most surveys start with qualifying questions, and if you don't fit the client's target demographic, the survey ends within the first minute or two. - Quota fills. Some surveys have response quotas. Once the quota fills up mid-survey, anyone still partway through can get booted out. Octopus pays a small consolation in that case too, per their support docs.

What Octopus does well
- Highest pay rate of any major Aussie panel. $0.28/min is corroborated by multiple independent AU review sites. PureProfile matches it on shorter surveys but trails on longer ones.
- Cash straight to your bank account. Direct EFT to an Aussie bank is supported. Members report payouts arriving well within the published 28-day window, often within a week. No PayPal, but that's honestly a feature — no third-party payment processor taking a cut.
- $0.10 consolation for screen-outs. Documented in their support materials. Tiny, but most consumer panels give you nothing at all when you get screened out.
- $20 minimum cashout. Way lower than the $50–100 thresholds some panels enforce. Members report hitting it in 1–3 weeks.

- No third-party spam. Per community reports, members don't get bombarded with marketing emails from other companies — just survey invites.
The not-so-great bits (read this before signing up)
Being straight with you: a search of Trustpilot Australia and ProductReview.com.au shows Octopus Group with mediocre aggregate ratings — around 2.1/5 on both, which is noticeably worse than PureProfile (~4.2/5) and YouGov (~4.5/5). I'd be doing you a disservice to leave that out. The recurring complaint patterns I found across those review sites and community threads are:
- "I keep getting screened out right before cashout." Easily the most common complaint. People say they accumulate balance steadily, then around $18–19 they suddenly stop qualifying. The honest answer is: the panel's demographic targeting is tight, and any run of screen-outs near the threshold could just be statistical bad luck. But it shows up often enough that it's worth flagging. (I get into the whole screen-out mechanic on the screen-out page — it's industry-wide, not an Octopus-specific thing.)
- "Account closed for fraud, balance forfeited." Another recurring pattern. Per Octopus's Terms of Membership, accounts can be terminated for things like multiple accounts (one per person, one per mobile number), inconsistent or low-effort survey responses, VPN use that hides your Australian location, and similar infractions. Some of these bans are probably false positives. Practical advice: answer thoughtfully, never make a second account, never use a VPN while taking surveys, and keep your demographic details consistent.
- Survey droughts. Some weeks you'll get nothing. This is normal across every consumer survey panel and isn't an Octopus-specific issue.
- Needs an Aussie or NZ mobile number. Per their Terms of Service, registration and cashout both require an AU/NZ mobile for SMS verification. No mobile, no membership.
- Minimum age 15 (with parent consent if under 18). Lower than most panels, but still excludes anyone under 15.
None of these are dealbreakers if you go in knowing about them. And honestly, variations of all of them show up on every major consumer survey panel — Octopus isn't unique here, they're just more honest in their rating aggregate than some competitors are.
How the referral program works
Octopus runs a "Tell-a-Friend" program, documented in their Terms of Service. Here's how it works (current version, effective from 1 June 2023):
- The Referrer (an existing member sharing their link) gets $2 when their Referee completes their first qualifying Campaign survey.
- The Referrer gets another $1 for each of the next 23 qualifying Campaign surveys the Referee completes.
- Maximum referrer payout is $25 per referred member.
- Octopus can cap referral volume at their discretion.
Important bit: the Referee (that's you, if you're using my link) gets no sign-up bonus, no boosted rate, no extra earnings of any kind. Your standard membership is identical whether you arrived via a referral link or signed up direct. Octopus pays the referral commission out of their marketing budget — it's not deducted from your earnings. Who Octopus is a good fit for
- Australians (or NZers) aged 15+, with a mobile number.
- People wanting realistic pocket money — think $20–100/month casually — with low effort.
- People who want cash to their bank, not gift cards or points systems.
- People who can roll with screen-outs without taking it personally (roughly 40–60% of survey attempts end in screen-out across the entire industry).
Who should skip it
- People expecting surveys to replace a real income — the per-minute rate doesn't support that, no panel does.
- People without an Aussie or NZ mobile number.
- People who'd be tempted to bend the rules (VPN, multiple accounts, speed-clicking through questions). You'll get banned and lose your balance.
- People who'd be furious about screen-outs. This is a whole-industry thing, not an Octopus-specific thing.

Octopus Group is the highest-paying consumer survey panel actively targeting Australians, with a verifiable Aussie corporate registration, a reachable $20 cashout, direct bank transfer support, and a small but real consolation payment for screen-outs that most competitors don't offer. The mediocre Trustpilot rating reflects real frustrations around screen-outs and account terminations — both genuine issues I've covered honestly above, and both of which apply in some form to every consumer survey panel.
